Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
