The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
