RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.
The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
